Toilet Training…. Are You Ready?

Toilet training is one of those areas parents are keen to sort out as soon as is possible in a child’s life. If your child is delayed with their learning you will want to be able to know when the right time is to start and what things you can do to help your child get ready.

There are good reasons why there are chapters upon chapters written about toilet training and even fun children’s books on the subject. Toilet training is more than just learning a routine. It is challenging for children and requires a huge set of skills for a child to acquire. That is why it is even more challenging if your child is having difficulties acquiring developmental skills.

Some of you may have started toilet training and feel you child isn’t making the progress you want in the time frame you had hoped for. Sometimes you might have started but given up.

If the thought of toilet training your child is a bit daunting the ‘Are You Ready? Toilet Training Program’ provides the information you need to make the toilet training less challenging.

This program will help you find out about all the ways you might already be helping your child get ready for toileting and how to make the most of these opportunities. It can help you look at what has been happening and find ways to adjust what you are doing.

The focus is very much about preparing you and your child to be ready. Do you know what you need to know so that you and your child can have a successful experience? How do you know if your child is physically ready? Do you know what things you can do everyday to make training easier?

Some parents who do this course may decide that their child isn’t quite ready to commence toilet training. However in the meantime, they will be doing what is needed to get ready their child ready.

How does this program work?
This program is a group for parents/carers runs over five weeks. In the first week you will take part in an individual goal setting session.  This will be followed by two weeks of group sessions where you will receive information about toilet training that you can individualise to your child. During this time you are undertaking close observations of your child. In week four, you will take part in an another individual goal setting session before taking part in a final group session in week five. The group sessions give you time to really understand the process of training and to share ideas. Families can book further appointments to help you monitor progress.

“Even after delivering this program many times I am always amazed how powerful the learning is about toilet training, when delivered as group learning. Perhaps it is because we talk about things that are usually private.
I think parents also find that it is easier to share their journey with other parents who have children that find it harder to do things. Often their friends have children that sorted out toilet training quickly and don’t understand how frustrating it might feel.” – Kerry, speech pathologist.
