Duck in the Truck by Jez Alborough
“This is the duck driving home in a truck.
This is the track which is taking him back.”
But along the way home duck is struck by an unexpected rock which lands him in a bit of a muck. With help from his friends will duck manage to escape?
Join us for this fun adventure filled with friendship, teamwork and lots of laughs as we discover whether Duck can get his truck unstuck!!!
How can reading Duck in the Truck help support your child’s learning?
- The text uses simple, repetitive language that helps keep children engaged and encourages to join in with the story.
- The rhyme helps children hear patterns in words, predicting what word might come next.
- The illustrations are bright and expressive, helping children understand the story, follow the actions and interpret how the characters are feeling.
- The humour makes reading enjoyable and can encourage children to stay more focused.
- The problem solving in the story encourages children to think about solutions and discuss ways duck and his friends might solve the problem.
- The sequence of events can help children remember and retell the story in the correct order, by talking about what happened first, next, last.
- The imagination and adventure can inspire children to think creatively, engage in pretend play and create their own stories.

Event Details
Look! By Jeff Mack
Look! By Jeff Mack is about a gorilla who wants a boy to notice him. The boy is too busy watching TV, so the gorilla tries different ways to get his attention while screaming out the word “LOOK”. It isn’t until the gorilla accidently knocks over the TV, that the boy turns to the gorilla and yells “OUT”. In his anger, the boy notices a book on the floor, discovers the wonders of books, and shares his experience with the gorilla.
How can reading LOOK! help support your child’s learning?
- The story uses only two words “Look!” and “Out!”, encouraging children to join in with the repetitive text.
- The simple text allows children to focus on the illustrations and use their imagination to follow and understand the storyline.
- The illustrations are clear, colourful and easy to understand, helping children make meaning from the pictures.
- The characters’ facial expressions show emotions, supporting children’s ability to recognise and talk about feelings.
- The story encourages children to make predictions about what might happen next through observation.
- Children can develop their own story be describing and commenting on what they see in the pictures.
- The story can be relatable to some children as it explores the meaning of wanting attention, making mistakes, understanding feelings and building friendships.
