Can we lick the Spoon now? By Carol Goess

This book takes me back to my childhood.  Licking the spoon while waiting for the cake to bake in the oven was my favourite part of baking.

Can we lick the spoon now takes us on a family cooking adventure where the famous “can we lick the spoon?” question is repeated throughout.  What’s worse than waiting to lick the spoon?  Waiting for the cake to bake of course.

This book showcases the joy of cooking together in the kitchen, being patient and taking turns.  The repetition of words, the rhythm and rhyme of the text encourage children to join in while reading.

Word of warning…be prepared to bake a cake after you read this book!!

How can reading Can we lick the spoon now? help support your child’s learning?
  • A fun and relatable story about baking that many children can connect with.
  • Helps children understand sequencing by following the steps of baking.
  • Introduces new words such as ingredients, mixing, measuring, stirring.
  • Builds prediction skills as children guess when the spoon can finally be licked.
  • Provides opportunities to talk about cause and effect, such as how ingredients change when they are mixed and baked.
  • Different font sizes and repeated words add excitement and expression to the story encouraging children to become involved and read along.
